Put under pressure by the French government, the producers and traders of wines, spirits and beers have just presented, this Wednesday, June 27, their “contribution” to the plan to fight against alcoholism. This plan includes around thirty measures aimed at combating ” binge-drinking“, (translate” drinking party “) and fetal alcoholism in pregnant women.
For 4 years, the wine industry will invest 500,000 euros per year, and those of beers and spirits 700,000 euros between them. A total of 4.8 million euros will therefore be invested by the alcohol lobby in this prevention plan.
Young people and pregnant women targeted
Apart from money, these three channels propose to increase the size of the logo signaling the ban on alcohol for pregnant women, on all bottles. They will also offer training in supermarkets to better enforce the ban on sale to minors. Finally, they will participate in the distribution of “wine-bags” in restaurants so that customers do not force themselves to finish their bottle. Contrary to cigarette, there is no price or tax increase in sight.
let’s remember that alcohol dependence affects 2.9% of French people, a high figure when we see that it is only 0.7% of the population in Spain or 0.5% in Italy, two countries that are nevertheless major wine producers. The French addictology federation also underlines the fact that alcohol kills more than firearms in the United States: 49,000 deaths against 33,000.
