Two 15-day-old Siamese sisters were successfully separated at the French Medical Institute for Children (IMFE) in Kabul, Afghanistan. This is the first time that such an operation has taken place in this Central Asian country.
Connected by the abdomen and the genitals, Ayesha and Sidiqa were born at their parents’ home in a small village in Badakhshan province, says the French association. The Chain of Hope on its website. The little girls were quickly transported to the nearest hospital. But faced with this extremely rare situation, the doctor called on Dr Jalil Wardak, head of pediatric surgery at IMFE, who took care of their transfer to Kabul.
The latter directed, Saturday 1er August, the operation which lasted more than 5 hours and mobilized a team of 5 doctors and 4 nurses. This first in Afghan medical history was made possible thanks to La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s Welfare program, which allows the most disadvantaged to have access to healthcare.
