Acne is a serious concern for many French people: in September 2013, thees keywords “severe acne” had 18 million results on the Google search engine. However, according to a survey carried out by CSA Santé with the support of the Pierre Fabre Dermatologie laboratories, 38% of patients suffering from acne are not taken care of by a health professional, just like 17% of patients suffering from severe acne.
Teenagers are not the only ones concerned, since one acne sufferer out of 4, among the five million French people affected by acne, is over 25 years old. This disease has a significant psycho-social impact and, if left untreated, it can be badly experienced and cause irreversible scars. “In fact, acne is a chronic disease, certainly benign clinically in the majority of cases, but the consequences of which are real”, recall the expert authors of the study.
If among the 10,000 French people who were contacted by the investigators, 38% of acne sufferers do not treat themselves or treat themselves alone, it is often because this disease is underestimated by those around the patient. “Parents of acne patients can sometimes miss the real concern that acne is for their child. Through ignorance, fear or negligence, weeks or months are lost”, note the researchers. The good news is that there are effective and lasting solutions for treating acne. Consulting a specialist is a first step towards good care.
