Since November 2014, Inserm invites more than 100,000 French people to participate in a study on everyday life accidents. And if only 14,000 people answered the online questionnaire (MAVIE), the first results were made public on May 18, 2015.
In total, only 1% of respondents said they had suffered a road accident during the past year and 1% an occupational accident. On the other hand, 10% of respondents say they have been victims of an accident in everyday life. Behind this name are hidden many areas, such as domestic life, sport, DIY, leisure or even the school environment.
This phenomenon is such that each year, the health watch institute (InVS) estimates that 20,000 people die as a result of these accidents, which is the third cause of death in France, after cancer and cardiovascular disease.
According to the first results, sports-related accidents are the most frequently cited, with an incidence twice as high in men as in women. Team sports with ball come first with 19%, followed by racket sports (18%) and combat sports (11.5%). Walking and jogging, on the other hand, represent only 6% of accidents in daily life, even though they are among the three sports most practiced by respondents along with swimming.
The mentally or physically handicapped and children are particularly affected by accidents in everyday life.
The authors of the study recall that all French people are strongly invited to participate in the study by completing the questionnaire of the MAVIE observatory websitein order to magnify the data and lead to a large-scale scientific study.
