Lower self-esteem among those who wanted an abortion
Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco (United States) studied women who sought an abortion. The objective of the study: to determine the effects on Mental Health abortion. They found that those who took the step were no more at risk of mental health problems than those who refused the abortion.
Published in the journal “JAMA Psychiatry“, the research involved 956 women residing in 21 states in the United States over five years. Of the 956 women, 231 were unable to have an abortion because they were beyond the gestation limit. The study notes that women who refused abortions reported more anxiety and lower self-esteem 8 days after seeking an abortion.
IVG: the experience of each woman is unique
“These early high levels of distress, experienced by both groups, may be a response to being rejected from an abortion, as well as other social and emotional challenges associated with discovering the unwanted pregnancy and abortion research “, say the researchers.
However, the rates of depression in these women were consistent with those of women who had undergone an abortion. After six months, symptoms of anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression had diminished or remained stable. “We can better meet the individual needs of women understanding that the experience of each of them is unique, ”says the study.
