A 32-year-old woman died of measles at the Poitiers University Hospital, according to the Regional Health Agency of New Aquitaine. Since November 2017 the epidemic of measles continues to grow in the region: 269 cases have been confirmed today. 66 cases, i.e. 1 in 4 measles required hospitalization and 4 patients had to be transferred to intensive care, 1 of whom died. While measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious viral infection, there is a vaccine that can stop the epidemic.
To avoid the epidemic, get vaccinated
“The vast majority of people affected by the current measles epidemic were not vaccinated”, explains the Agency, which indicates in its press release that the cause of the measles epidemic in New Aquitaine is due to a lack of vaccination. In the region.
An infected person can affect 15 to 20 people if the vaccination coverage is not sufficient in the surroundings. Measles is not benign and can take severe forms (respiratory failure, sometimes irreversible neurological complications) requiring hospitalization and possibly leading to death in the most complicated cases.
“All children and young adults should be vaccinated against measles. It is a very effective vaccination that protects against the disease in almost 100% of cases after 2 doses of vaccine. This is why, since January 1, 2018, vaccination against measles is one of the 11 compulsory vaccinations for children, ”recalls the Directorate General of Health.
