According to a new case study published this week in YWAM Reports, a 5-year-old boy ended up in the emergency room after swallowing 40 chewing gums.
Cramps and diarrhea
A resident of Ohio, the young patient presented to the hospital with cramps and diarrhea due to obstruction in his digestive tract.
After having identified them using a scanner, the doctors gradually removed the coagulated candies via an esophagoscope and forceps passing through the patient’s mouth. The latter was then able to leave the hospital without sequelae, despite a persistent sore throat due to the progressive extraction of the rubbery mass.
“If you have swallowed a chewing gum inadvertently, know that it will come out about 40 hours later in your stool”, precise in THE New York Post dietitian Beth Czerwony. “As it cannot be digested, it comes out whole”, she adds.
Bowel obstruction
Be careful though: “if you do it several times a day, you risk causing intestinal obstruction”, warns the specialist in conclusion.
