The Finistère village is looking for a general practitioner before its only doctor retires at the end of 2017. The town is therefore increasing its initiatives.
“Plonévez-Porzay is looking for doctors”. Like castaways on a desert island, nearly 530 people gathered on the beach of Sainte-Anne-la-Palud (Finistère) to inscribe this message in the sand and form a caduceus, symbol of the medical professions, by means of a human chain.
The population of this town in Brittany responded to the appeal of the mayor and the” Porzay Health Professionals Association. Patients of all ages, some in wheelchairs, came to participate in this event aimed at attracting a second general practitioner.
A few weeks before this big gathering, the 12 health practitioners who are members of the association made a humorous clip using the codes of ” Impossible mission “. “Your mission if you accept it: to integrate our team within the Plonévez-Porzay health center”, joke the pharmacist, physiotherapist, osteopath, nurses, podiatrist.
Attract a general practitioner
But behind this humorous clip hides a reality common to many municipalities in France: in a year, Plonévez-Porzay could lose its only general practitioner. By the end of 2017, the person who takes care of the 1,800 inhabitants will retire.
The village has therefore taken the initiative not to become a medical desert, which could be compared to an almost impossible mission. The municipality has decided to build a health center of nearly 400 m2 to welcome all the village health professionals. But to benefit from the support of the Regional Health Agency (ARS), two general practitioners must join the happy team.
The arrival of one of the doctors is already assured. Dr Vincent Bauta, an intern at Douarnenez hospital, should settle in November 2017 thanks to the public service engagement contract (CESP) he signed during his studies in Paris, and which commits him to his ‘settle in a medical desert.
Dating generalist in Brest
It remains to find the second doctor. The association and the municipality hope to find it during the second edition of the “Generalist Dating: 60 seconds to convince”, organized by the ARS of Brittany, on October 20 at the Faculty of Medicine of Brest. The aerial photos taken on the beach and the video clip will be presented to the candidate doctors.
The village of Plonévez-Porzay will find a neighboring municipality, Landudec, which has also broadcast on the internet a humorous video “Toubib or not Toubib” which has already been viewed more than 143,400 times.
