Cycling is the most efficient means of transport for weight loss, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Lancet Diabetes-Endocrinology. This sporting activity would keep a stable weight and reduce fat mass.
Car and public transport: the most common modes of travel
Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK analyzed medical data from UK Biobank, a resource base created to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases. They took into account Body Mass Index (BMI) and the fat mass rate of the participants. Then, the scientists evaluated the links between the mode of transport and the risk of obesity, in 72,999 men and 83,667 women, aged 40 to 60 years. They first noted that the majority of men (64%) and women (61%) get around either by car or by public transport.
Only 23% of men and 24% of women walk or cycle on a daily basis.
Cycling helps keep BMI stable
The findings of this study revealed that cyclists have a reduced BMI of 1.71 kg / m2 and female cyclists have a lower BMI of 1.71 kg / m2. BMI decreased by 1.65 kg / m2 compared to individuals who use their car. This reduction inBMI constitutes a weight difference of 5kg.
Cycling helps reduce body fat
Scientists observed that the rate of body fat for cycling enthusiasts was 2.75% lower for men and 3.26% lower for women.
On the other hand, people who use their cars to get around increase their risk ofobesity or overweight.
Sedentary lifestyle is one of the main causes of obesity and early mortality. “It is essential to use every opportunity, in a lifestyle after all sedentary and in the daily routine, to get some exercise,” conclude the authors of the study.
