- The goal of this initiative is to “give muscle science and medicine the means to transform the lives of the French,” we read in a press release.
- By interacting with numerous organs and biological mechanisms, our 600 muscles are a major determinant of everyone’s state of health.
With the increase in sedentary lifestyle, muscle has become a real public health issue. As a result, 43 personalities are calling for a “muscle plan” national as a legacy of the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This call follows the first muscle meetings organized by the Institute of Myology.
Muscle plan: what is the purpose of this call?
The aim of this initiative is to “give muscle science and medicine the means to transform the lives of the French”we can read in a press release.
By interacting with numerous organs and biological mechanisms, our 600 muscles are a major determinant of everyone’s state of health. They are notably involved in growth, the regulation of body temperature, stress or cholesterol, the strengthening of the immune system, the reduction of osteoporosis, the prevention of relapses of breast and colon cancers, etc.
“Because it catalyzes prevention and innovation, myology (muscle science and medicine, Editor’s note) has the capacity to provide concrete answers to many major challenges that France must face today: prevention of chronic pathologies ( cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc.), health of the youngest, autonomy of the elderly, well-being at work, sustainability of the healthcare system, therapeutic innovation, international recognition” continue the signatories of the appeal.
Muscle plan: what are the proposed measures?
“A strong plan could propose concrete measures to respond to these challenges. they add, listing various possible lines of action.
In the area of prevention:
– raise awareness of the vital role of muscle at each stage of life and assess the muscular capital of each French person;
– ensure the practice of regular and appropriate physical activity in children, adolescents, adults and the elderly to combat the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
In the care pathway:
– provide information on the benefits of physical activity and integrate it into care pathways in order to systematize its prescription or recommendation when necessary;
– integrate or reinforce adapted physical activities (APA) in care programs as soon as the patient’s condition allows it and allow their reimbursement in cases of chronic pathologies.
In the field of research:
– integrate transdisciplinary teaching dedicated to myology in all health study courses, with the creation of dedicated training courses;
– to recognize myology as a transversal discipline and make it a priority area of research.
