Thanks to a classified ad recently published in the Netherlands, a forgotten motorhome badged Audi has resurfaced. In the 1980s, the manufacturer had approved the transformation of Audi 100 by the specialist Bischofberger.
The Audi catalog today is full of options of all kinds: home fragrance, kayak holder… But in the 1980s you could go much further, and equip your Audi 100 or 200 with a bed and even a a kitchen. Admittedly, it was not to a distributor of the mark with the rings that it was necessary to address for that but to Bischofberger, which marketed small quantities of Audi sedans transformed into motorhomes.

A project approved by Audi
According to Audi quattrology – August Horch Erbe, the story began when, after a first experiment on an Audi 100 type 43, Bischofberger received Audi’s agreement to market motorhomes based on the Audi 100 type 44 in small series. Two versions were offered: low with opening or high roof tent. And the five-cylinder engine could be mated to a manual or automatic transmission as desired. The fiberglass cab rested on a tubular structure that reinforced the body of the car. The suspension and brakes were revised accordingly. Fridge and stove were among the amenities available. A few dozen cars were produced.
The forgotten Audi motorhome
Although confidential in its time and forgotten by many today, the Audi 100 motorhome from Bischofberger still enjoys sufficient notoriety for miniatures have been marketed and sometimes surface on classified ad sites.
It is much more difficult to find a “real” one, but a copy was recently on sale in the Netherlands, offered by a certain Roland Bischofberger.
