Whether in our workplaces or in our homes, the carpet invites itself everywhere. In France, more than 38.5 million square meters are sold each year. However, a report produced by the consultancy organization Anthesis, reveals the presence of 59 toxic substances in the composition of carpets sold within the European Union. Among them, we find endocrine disruptors, from heavy metals (lead, mercury), phthalates (used as a plasticizer), pesticides, etc. These substances are used as preservatives, flame retardants or even stains.
4 of these substances are prohibited
Of the 59 substances identified, 4, all phthalates, are prohibited for sale by the European Union. Even more worrying, 37 of these substances are not subject to any restriction or ban in the manufacture of carpets. The report therefore makes several recommendations to the European Union, Member States and manufacturers:
– Eliminate toxic substances
– Strengthen the rules for new products and chemicals
– Extend the responsibility of the producer
– Develop eco-design measures, informing about “toxic-free carpets”
The populations most exposed to these substances are children. While playing on the floor, they touch, breathe and can ingest carpet fibers. It is therefore advisable to clean regularly and ventilate the rooms where the carpet is laid as much as possible.
