Dietitian’s Favorites in 2020
In 2020 a lot of books about healthy nutrition and lifestyle were published. Dietitian Mary Stottelaar read and assessed quite a few for Plus Online. These five came out on top. Recommended to read!
1. Dr. Megan Rossi’s Eating Happiness
A good and practical book, according to Mary. She writes in her review: the scientific basis is really good, and Rossi also clearly indicates what is and what is not scientifically substantiated. She is very honest that some things we simply don’t know yet. You can’t catch her making unsubstantiated claims. With this book, Rossi shows exactly what dieticians are so good at: translating science into daily practice in advice that really helps and practically worked out in recipes. I also really like the many easy variations she gives to the recipes, so that one recipe suddenly becomes more different recipes. In short, a must!
2. Highway to health
A super fun book to get started with, says Mary. “Hats off to Mouha who provides so much good information about healthy eating and living in a fun and creative way. All the steps in this book are meaningful. I just think that you should actually take a little more time to take the steps. Of course everyone prefers a quick fix and we would rather have a new healthier lifestyle in 30 days than in 1 year. So Mouha really discusses the Highway to health, while I would rather take the B roads. it will last longer, but the chance is greater that it will stick. Keep that in mind when you start working with this book: you can also do 30 weeks with 1 step a week.”
3. Eat better for your stomach and intestines ★★★★☆
Mary about this book: “There are many people in the Netherlands who regularly suffer from stomach and intestinal problems. The right nutrition can really make a difference and that is why it is very nice that De Weijer and her team have made this book. I I do think that a lot is asked of the reader who gets started with Eat better for your stomach and intestines. I find the practical explanation of the different phases very brief. I would therefore recommend the guidance of a dietician in this process. The book is really only suitable for people with intestinal complaints. The first book by De Weijer is much better suited for anyone who just wants to eat a bit healthier.”
4. Keto cure
Good explanation, delicious recipes, but pay attention, Mary says about this book. “Naessens’ explanation about the ketogenic diet is very clear and honest. She has made a clear translation into practice. The delicious recipes invite you to actually get started. You can read the entire review here.
5. The hamster in your brain ★★★★☆
The book The hamster in your brain also gets four stars from Mary. Because yes, this book really helps, she writes. “It shows you how our brains work if you want to lose weight. With the main message: lose weight slowly for permanent weight loss. And I fully support that. I think it’s a shame that they recommend counting calories: that’s exactly what we should do.” It is more important to choose foods that contain a lot of nutrients, which is healthier than strictly watching the calories.”
