Eating low-fat yogurt and dairy products is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. This is the result of an 11-year study.
“Dairy products are our lifelong friends! This historic slogan of the Center National Interprofessionnel de l’Economie Laitière (CNIEL) has never been so justified. Yogurts and other low-fat fermented dairy products are associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, a study in Feb. Diabetologia.
Proteins, vitamins, minerals… the beneficial elements of dairy products are numerous. Due to their high fat content, their consumption should be limited. But that does not mean that we should ban them from our diet, on the contrary. This study shows that consuming a good amount is much more beneficial than abstaining from it. “This study highlights the fact that certain foods can have an important role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, and can appear in health messages,” comments Dr. Nita Forouhi. This is the case with dairy products, provided they are low in fat.
A beneficial effect due to vitamin D, calcium and probiotics
Fermented dairy products (yoghurts, fromage frais, fromage frais) low in fat are beneficial. An 11-year study found a 24% reduction in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Low-fat yogurts are the most beneficial. As long as you eat 4 and a half jars per week (4 times ½ 125g), the risk of type 2 diabetes is reduced by 28%. Consuming it instead of a classic snack is also positive.
“At a time when there is increasing evidence that high consumption of certain foods (…) is bad for our health, it is reassuring to hear that other foods, such as yoghurts or low-fat fermented dairy products, can be good for your health, ”says Dr Forouhi. This study certainly only highlights an association. However, researchers believe that vitamin D, calcium or probiotics are responsible for this reduced risk.
