“How to sleep well? »: Here is a question that never goes out of fashion! According to an INSV / MGEN study conducted in 2015, 73% of French people wake up at least once a night, 25% sleepy during the day, 16% suffer from insomnia and 33% say they have “sleep disorders”.
To sleep better, the remedies of grandmothers are popular … and some are downright unusual! Precisely: in a study published this Tuesday, April 16, 2019 in the specialized journal Sleep health, researchers from the NYU School of Medicine (in the United States) looked at the 3 most common misconceptions about sleep.
To do this, American researchers reviewed 8000 websites in order to identify the 20 most common myths about “sleeping well”. Three received ideas stand out in particular: to spend a night worthy of the name, you should sleep 5 hours maximum; snoring is not serious; drinking a glass of alcohol before going to bed helps you sleep well.
Alcohol before sleeping, to avoid
The American researchers first recall that it is necessary to sleep at least 7 hours a night to stay healthy – the myth of 5 hours of sleep is, according to them, the most dangerous in the long term. While snoring can actually be without consequences for health, it can also be a symptom of sleep apnea: researchers therefore advise us to consult in the event of very pronounced snoring.
Finally, alcohol consumption before falling asleep delays the onset of deep sleep: this “restful sleep” plays a major role in physical recovery and energy restoration.
The researchers recognize, however, that certain “myths” around sleep still divide the scientific community: thus, sleeping in during the weekend could disrupt the biological clock … or, on the contrary, have a positive impact on the body. .
