Gathered in Madrid for their 28th congress, doctors from the European Academy of Dermatology presented a study that points to the three main factors involved in acne. Dermatologists assessed exposure to different acne-aggravating factors in more than 6,700 participants from six countries in North America, South America and Europe. According to their findingsPoor eating habits, increased stress, and poor skincare routines are the most common factors associated with acne.
Watch out for dairy and sugar
On the food side, the study shows that a significantly higher number of people with acne (48.2%) consume dairy products daily compared to people who do not (38.8%). The difference is also statistically significant for fruit juices and sodas (35.6% against 31%), pastries and chocolate (37% against 27.8%), not to mention sweets (29.7% against 19 .1%).
Exposure to pollution or stress is also more common in people with acne than in control participants.
Acne is estimated to affect one in 10 people worldwide, making it the 8th most common disease. It was recently reported that acne also affects up to 40% of adult women.
