Buyers are queuing
According to the initial plans, the first Tesla Cybertrucks were to appear very soon. Unfortunately, it seems that candidates will have to wait a little longer. The release date on Tesla’s website has been moved this week from 2021 to 2022. A month is not mentioned. Bad news for the 1.2 million people who reserved a Cybertruck. That’s at least the figure that fans calculated. That sounds like an outrageous number for such a ‘gotta love it’ car. How realistic is this estimate?
Tesla Cybertruck reservations: they are not customers yet
It is important to know that interested parties can buy a place in the queue for 100 dollars. If they change their mind, they’ll just get the $100 back. It is therefore possible that part of the reservations will be withdrawn. For example, because someone already bought something else in the meantime. Or because they reserved under the motto ‘if it doesn’t help, it won’t hurt’. As with other sought-after items, there will also be enough people buying a Cybertruck to immediately resell it for some profit.
Ford has already presented an electric pick-up, GMC is launching a huge Hummer EV (also as a pick-up) and various new brands such as Rivian are also working hard. It is therefore imaginable that in the time that it took before the Cybertruck appeared on the road, lovers of electric pick-ups have already gone for an alternative. On the other hand, relatively few new cars are currently being built due to the chip shortage, so there may also be people who would like to wait a little longer.
Not very unrealistic
Although more than 1 million reservations for the Tesla Cybertruck sounds like a bizarre number, it’s not that crazy. Ford already sells more than 900,000 copies of the F-150 in the US on an annual basis. Ram and Chevrolet together also sell more than 1 million pickups per year. The market for pick-ups in America is still very large. If Tesla can deliver all the promised specs, there will no doubt be a ton of Cybertrucks for sale.
