Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: zinc against covid-19?
Are Zinc Diet Supplements Virucidal? Are they available in pharmacies without a medical prescription?
Answer:
Zinc is a mineral that we need for a properly functioning immune system. There have been reports in the news that zinc would help treat a covid infection. However, there is no evidence for that. Zinc tablets are available without a prescription as a dietary supplement. Zinc is also found in all kinds of foods such as meat, cheese and nuts. You almost never have a shortage of it, so it is not useful as a protection against a virus infection. Would you like to take something extra for that purpose? Unlike zinc, many people are vitamin D deficient. So think more about vitamin D tablets. According to the Health Council, it is not yet certain whether vitamin D protects against corona, but whether sufficient vitamin D is important for your immune system. For women over 50 and men over 70, extra vitamin D is recommended anyway.
