They were 79% in 2016, 75% in 2017. 18-24 year olds are now only 66% in 2018 to declare being covered by complementary health, according to the annual Epsy barometer for the National Independent Federation of Mutuals (Fnim) published this Tuesday, January 8. A particularly notable decrease among students, so much so that the federation deplores in a press release : “The equipment rate of the younger generations is plummeting”.
A worsening trend
In fact, among students, the proportion of people covered by a mutual health insurance has fallen from 85% to 69%. A drop that the Fnim designates as “The expression of both the economic difficulties encountered and the mistrust of collective social protection”. However, since September 1, 2018, new university students are automatically attached to the general social security system. Previously, they had to join a student social security and pay an annual contribution of 217 euros.
The Fnim is also concerned about the decline observed in households with modest incomes, that is to say who receive less than 20,000 euros per year. Their equipment rate has gone from 84% to 80% in one year.
All age groups combined, 10% of the 1,000 French people surveyed at the end of 2018 said they did not have a mutual fund. A “Worsening trend”, explains the federation, since this rate oscillated between 6 and 8% since 2013. However, underlines the press release, the level of satisfaction of the French equipped “Remains perfectly stable, at 92%”, even if 39% of in-between consider the cost of their complementary excessive. Only 7% could do without.
