We are familiar with spring cleaning, but did you know that freezing cold also offers opportunities for household chores? Make the most of the cold with these tips!
1. Clean Freezer
A freezer with a thick layer of ice consumes much more power. In addition, it takes longer for products to be frozen in a caked-on freezer. So defrost and polish! Handy when it’s freezing, because you just put all frozen products outside. If you do that in the summer, all the food will thaw and you won’t be able to freeze it again. A perfect job for the winter. Here you will find a step-by-step plan for defrosting the freezer.
2. Say goodbye to dust mites
A handy tip for people who are allergic to house dust mites: hang your duvet, pillow and rug outside. The dirty critters freeze to death in the cold. This also applies to clothing: just hang it outside on a line. Especially when the sun is shining. It saves energy costs and your laundry smells wonderfully fresh afterwards. If you bring in the frozen laundry, you will see that it is dry again in no time.
Extra tip: While you’re busy with your bedding, you might as well put your mattress outside. Don’t you just want to put it on the ground? Then place some pieces of wood or place a few stones where you put the mattress and lean it against a wall or fence. Get rid of dust mites!
3. A radiant, clean rug
Is there dry, powdery snow outside? Then you can clean your carpet in it. Place the rug right side on the snow, tap it gently, then let the rug dry thoroughly. The snow makes the colors of the carpet a lot nicer and the dirt is easily removed.
4. Gone itchy sweater!
We all know it: those lovely, warm sweaters that unfortunately itch enormously. Fortunately, something can be done about the latter. Make the sweater a little damp, take a plastic bag and put your sweater in it. Then you leave it overnight in the freezing cold. The next morning, carefully remove the sweater from the bag and let it thaw gently.
5. Fresh sports gear
Also handy: put sports items that you don’t want to throw in the washing machine too often, such as helmets or shin guards, outside in the freezing cold. Put them in a plastic bag, leave them outside for a few hours and all bacteria will be killed and the bad odors dispelled.
