Freezing: tasty, healthy and sustainable
Avocados, bananas, nuts: sometimes you have too much of them and you have no idea what to do with them. Fortunately, you can simply freeze these and more surprising foods. Useful!
1. Avocados
This makes you very happy: you can eat avocados keep in the freezer for up to four months without losing texture or flavor. Then you just have to do it this way:
- Cut the avocados in half and remove the pit with a knife or spoon.
- Keep them in a vacuum (freezer) bag.
- Put them in the freezer.
- Do you want to eat one? Then place it with the light green, cut side on kitchen paper, so that the paper can absorb the moisture of the avocado – which is created during defrosting.
2. Hummus
If you make your own hummus, you can simply freeze it. Then pour a layer of olive oil over it. Tip: make large portions immediately and store your homemade hummus in a well-sealed freezer container.
3. Bananas
You can freeze bananas – without peel – very easily by storing them separately in freezer bags. Note: put the bananas in separate bags, otherwise they will freeze together. Want to use frozen banana for smoothies? Make slices of them first before putting them in the freezer.
4. Cheese
You can freeze young and old cheeses, but it is best to grate them beforehand. An entire block can become grainy when defrosted. Ideal if you have leftover cheese and want to cook with it.
5. Eggs
Freezing eggs? Yes, you can, but you have to beat them first and pour them into an ice cube tray. Adding some salt and pepper will prevent your egg from separating.
6. Herbs
A known problem: you’ve bought all fresh herbs for your meal, but you’re not using everything. Sin! Fortunately, you can also freeze herbs. Chop everything finely and put it in an ice cube tray. Just add some water or olive oil over it. Do you need herbs next time? Then you don’t have to wait for the ice cubes to thaw – just put them directly in the pan.
7. Nuts
Did you buy fresh nuts? Then you want them to retain their taste for as long as possible. Put the nuts in a bag and then you can store them in your freezer for up to two years.
8. Lemon
You can also keep lemon in the freezer. Cut several slices and you have a slice every day to refresh your glass of water. Yummy! This also applies to other citrus fruits, such as lime, orange and grapefruit. This makes drinking water very easy.
