Summer is coming. The swimsuits will come out of the closet … But are men and women equal when it comes to small extra bulges? No, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the Naturavox information site at Ifop to analyze the issue of weight in the couple. The dictates of slimming in force affect women more deeply than men, whereas the latter are more often above the norms.
Women more sensitive to weight than men
Even though women have less weight to lose than (41%) than men (58%) yet they are more likely (66%) than men (53%) to say they have need to lose some to feel good in a swimsuit this summer.
However, the study reveals that the gaze focused on the other is less severe than on oneself. Indeed, if the majority of people in a relationship think they have weight to lose personally (60%), only a third of them (33%) say that their partner is too fat.
Losing weight as a couple, not so common
The couple makes you fat. The survey reveals that three in four French people (74%) observed having gained weight and the longer their relationship lasts, the more the kilos stagnate: 81% of people in a relationship for more than 20 years have declared a weight gain , against barely 50% of couples under three (50%).
Yet among the French who have noticed that they have gained weight since they were in a relationship, only a minority have tried to fight against the extra pounds with their partner (44%).
Weight, a brake on seduction
Men place more importance on weight in choosing a mate. Indeed, they are more likely (23%) than women (17%) to have thought of not continuing a relationship because of their weight, even if they liked this person.
As a result, this study tells us that women convinced of the importance of weight in seduction, they are more likely (35%) than men (30%) to withdraw because they thought they were too fat to please. Women for whom weight remains an obstacle to seduction are over-represented among young people (54% among women aged 25 to 34) and higher education graduates (40%).
“The results of this study confirm that with the approach of the jersey test, the” weight constraint “always weighs more intensely on the women than on the men and this independently of their real corpulence. In a country like France. where the underweight of women is more valued than in the rest of Europe, thinness is therefore always in summer a primarily female issue as it remains a criterion closely associated with female beauty “, concludes François Kraus director of the ‘Gender, sexuality and sexual health expertise at Ifop
