A study by researchers from McGill University reveals that daily calcium intakes of up to 1000 mg per day limit the risk of death for women.
Calcium is an essential nutrient for bones and must be consumed regularly for good health. But, previous research has shown that calcium supplementation may be associated with an elevated risk of heart disease.
Lisa Langsetmo, associate researcher at McGill University and David Goltzman, Professor in the McGill Department of Medicine conducted research using data from 9,033 Canadians followed for 12 years and participating in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos) cohort on the effects of calcium supplementation on the risk of death. During this study, 1,160 participants died.
The survey results demonstrated that daily consumption of calcium supplements is associated with a lower risk of death for women. The perfect dose would be 1000mg per day. On the other hand, this calcium intake would have no effect on men.
Calcium supplementation must be strictly controlled by a doctor. Prefer to modify your natural calcium intake, the effects of which are as convincing as supplementation. Which, it can increase the risk of heart problem.
The results of this study are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
