A 27-year-old Chinese woman is said to have become sterile after undergoing 17 abortions since she was 21.
Xiao Ju would have become sterile at the age of 27 because, according to her doctor, of the 17 abortions she underwent in the past 6 years, reports the Mirror. Yet in a relationship for all this time, the young woman voluntarily interrupted a first pregnancy at the age of 21 and has continued to do so in the following years. On average, Xiao Ju would have undergone three abortions per year and would be a regular at the gynecology department of Shiyan Hospital (China). A situation which is explained by the fact that her companion and she do not use a means of contraception. History does not say why.
“I found the lining of her uterus extremely thin”
Doctor Zhao Qin, who has often taken care of her, explains to the British media that he nevertheless informed his patient of the risks she ran by carrying out a 17th abortion, namely that she could never become pregnant again because of about the state of her uterus, but to no avail. “I found the lining of her uterus to be extremely thin, like a sheet of paper, from the repeated abortions she had undergone,” he explained. Xiao Ju still has insisted on terminating her pregnancy, telling her doctor that she could not afford to raise a child.
It is important to remember that abortion is not a means of contraception, but also to specify that when it is done well, it generally does not create a risk of sterility. “On the contrary, fertility returns quite quickly. It will therefore be necessary to anticipate so that you have a means of contraception from the day of the intervention”, specifies the site of the government.
Repeated abortions in France too
According to the National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED), 216,685 abortions were performed in France in 2017, slightly more than in 2016 (216,061) but less than in 2015 (220,439). According to a study carried out by Opinion Way for the student social security organization Smerep in 2016, nearly 6% of French high school girls have already had an abortion.
Investigation of the INED conducted in 2015, indicated that recourse to abortion was decreasing, but was occurring more often. The authors indeed write on page 5 that “the share of repeated abortions is steadily increasing (in France, editor’s note). A third of women (33%) have recourse to abortion at least once during their life, of which 10% twice and 4% three or more times”.
