Windows 11 components broken due to expired certificate

Due to an expired certificate, some Windows 11 components will temporarily stop working. Users run into problems when they want to open the snipping tool and the emoji menu, among other things.

Windows uses certificates to verify that programs and features are legitimate. Such a certificate from Microsoft itself expired on October 31 and that appears to affect multiple Windows 11 components. In addition to the snipping tool and emoji panel, the touch keyboard, voice typing, and Windows tips menu no longer work properly.

Who Windows 11 running in S mode also notices problems with the start menu and settings overview page. In part, there is a fix in the form of an optional Windows update (KB4006746), but it does not apply to the S mode and the default snipping tool of Windows 11. It is not yet known when patches will be released for this.

Detours

As an alternative, Microsoft recommends taking screenshots with the PrintScreen button and then pasting them into a program like Paint. The screenshot can be edited and saved there. Windows 11 users have found out for themselves that the Snipping Tool works again after setting the system date to October 30, and then back to the current date.

Windows 11 has only recently been released and it will come as no surprise that its rollout is not going smoothly. For example, PCs with AMD processors were affected by an annoying bug, which prevented them from working at full speed. Recent updates from both Microsoft and AMD would have remedied this shortcoming.
