According to a study published in the journal Sleep health, college students should not go to class too early to limit their risk of suffering from mental disorders.
Suffer from anxiety or depression
It is not always easy to get a teenager out of bed in the morning. From 11 to 16 years old, young people need a lot of sleep. Getting them up too early would even be dangerous for their health. In any case, this is revealed by a team of researchers from the University of Rochester, in the United States, in a study. According to this work, teens who start class before 8:30 a.m. are more likely to develop mental health problems.
To reach this conclusion, they followed nearly 200 young people, aged 14 to 17, for a week. They tried to find out what their habits were, how many hours they slept at night, and what time they had to go to college. They were able to see that those who got up the earliest were also those who had the more likely to develop symptoms of anxiety or even depression.
The importance of good sleep for health
” The start time of school affects the quality of sleep, even when young people are doing whatever it takes to get a good night’s sleep », Said Professor Jack Peltz, psychiatrist at the University of Rochester who participated in this work. Certainly, other factors come into play, but apart from all these factors, waking up has a real impact on the mental health of young people.
If you can’t change the time you wake up, you can decide to go to bed earlier and not stay up late in front of the screens to improve the quality of your sleep. Experts on the issue recommend in particular going to bed and waking up at the same time each dayeven on weekends. Difficult to impose this rule on adolescents, but it will bring real changes in their daily life.
