Therapy is now available to everyone.
Consulting a shrink requires feeling sufficiently motivated to work on yourself, identify your difficulties and want to solve them. Far from being for the “crazy”, the shrink responds to all kinds of requests with tools ranging from psychotherapy techniques to medication in some cases.
To be listened to
If the reasons that lead to consulting a shrink can be very broad (mental illness, personality disorder, addiction, behavioral problems, psychotrauma, evaluation, family conflicts, etc.), the treatment always starts with listening to the patient demand and suffering. Having a place to confide and express yourself freely, in the absence of judgment, is an essential step in building a relationship of trust with your therapist.
If the therapy often encourages you to confront your difficult emotions, it also allows you to understand your own functioning and ultimately avoid certain destructive behaviors or sources of anxiety.
Finding Meaning and Freedom
Thus, whatever the reason for consulting a psychiatrist, psychologist or psychotherapist, the goal must always be to relieve suffering as much as possible. For some it will be about stopping crying or panicking, while others are looking for a balance that allows them to function on a daily basis.
Setting achievable goals with your therapist therefore makes it possible to know whether the therapy should continue or not. If relief is felt and the therapist becomes an unnecessary crutch, it’s time to stop and possibly come back to it if necessary.
