There is a rare form of narcolepsy which causes a sudden drowsiness after a strong emotion. Jessica a healthy 20 year old British mother is affected by this rare disease, her story is told by the Daily Star and revealed by WhyDoctor.
Laughing, having an orgasm, experiencing a strong emotion, all these states cause Jessica to have a narcoleptic state with cataplexy.
The first time Jessica experienced this state, she was 16 years old. At tea time, her aunt tells her a joke that makes Jessica laugh a lot and she collapses. Affected by a rare form of narcolepsy, called narcolepsy-cataplexy, the young woman is affected by bouts of sleep during the day, sudden relaxations of muscle tone without loss of consciousness, sometimes hallucinations and sleep paralysis. Most often after strong emotions.
She therefore also found herself in this state at the birth of his son and often after Orgasm. When she has narcolepsy-cataplexy, she can sleep for 13 hours straight. “I’m completely awake, I hear everything, but I can’t speak or move,” she told the newspaper. I stay in this state until the emotion stops, and that may take some time.
Solutions for living with the disease
To avoid bruising, stitches and concussions, Jessica always stays well wedged in a sofa when she watches a comedy on television. The floor of his living room is made into a soft surface in case of a fall. During sex, her partner always stays very close to her so that he can hold her back in case of a crisis.
“It might sound funny, and I try to be light-hearted about it, but it’s actually really awful,” the girl concludes.
