I have been struggling with foot problems for some time now. Now a friend said I should take it to a podiatrist. But my GP mentions a podiatrist. What is the difference?
An podiatrist is a legally recognized and protected title by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, listed in the BIG Act, article 34. This legislation specifies which care providers may provide which care. In this way, the government monitors the quality of care. He or she is guaranteed to have an HBO bachelor’s degree after completing a four-year HBO course.
Not legally recognized
The titles (registered) podiatrist, podo-postural therapist or podo kinesiologist are not legally recognized and may be used by anyone. The training requirements for podiatrists are also much less demanding than those for podiatrists. Often these professionals have followed a thorough training or course, but this is not always the case. Because everyone can call themselves a podiatrist, the Loop Foundation has coined the term ‘registered podiatrist’, which sets quality requirements for the podiatrists.
