“I have a fairly widespread genetic disease: keratoconus” revealed Camille Combal, host of TF1, in an interview with the newspaper L’Équipe. To regain normal sight, the facilitator needs a cornea transplant in both eyes.
Keratoquoi?
Keratoconus is an evolving deformation of the eye, and more precisely of the cornea, which most often manifests itself in adolescence. The cornea is a transparent membrane that follows the curvature of the eye, so it is naturally slightly bulging. It allows light rays to reach the retina and thus send clear images back to the brain.
But in the case of keratoconus, the cornea becomes too soft, it deforms and bulges excessively, taking the shape of a cone. The light that passes through it is therefore derived and the images perceived by the retina become blurred and duplicate.
How to treat keratoconus?
Keratoconus is most often treated by wearing glasses or special corrective lenses. But in some cases, opaque spots can appear on the cornea: the patient can no longer see anything.
In this case, or if wearing lenses is not bearable, a cornea transplant is necessary. This is the case of Camille Combal. The facilitator has already had an eye transplant and should soon undergo a second operation to finally regain normal sight.
