This Wednesday, March 29, 2023, 200 cosmetic surgeons signed a forum with our colleagues from Parisian to ask the authorities to better regulate the sale of hyaluronic acid.
Indeed: at present, it is possible to buy hyaluronic acid freely, in pharmacies (without a prescription) or on the internet. This product is then used by “non-physician injectors [qui] perform illegal acts on the population” or directly by the general public – “we also see people, including minors, who inject these products themselves, for example to increase the volume of the lips, by following pseudo-instructions available on online videos“.
“These illegal injections often lead to irreversible complications. In some cases, they could lead to sepsis, gangrene and hospitalizations in intensive care, threatening the vital prognosis of young patients..”
What is hyaluronic acid?
First thing to know: originally, hyaluronic acid is a natural molecule since it is a sugar (more precisely: a polysaccharide) that is found in the skin.
Like elastin and collagen, hyaluronic acid contributes to skin suppleness. Except that with age, the stocks of hyaluronic acid decrease (at 50, we only have 50% left), which partly causes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines…
In aesthetic medicine, hyaluronic acid is used as a filler: it is used in injection to firm and restructure frown lines, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, wrinkles around the mouth…
Completely biocompatible, non-allergenic and 100% resorbable, hyaluronic acid is a priori safe for health… provided that the injection is carried out with suitable equipment and by a surgical professional. aesthetic !
