Israeli scientists have suggested that cannabis oil may be effective in treating autism.
- In France, about 700,000 people are affected by autism, of which 100,000 are under 20 years old.
- Cannabis oil would treat autism, reducing anxiety and reducing compulsive behavior.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, the origins of which are multifactorial with a strong genetic component. This pathology, which manifests itself during early childhood and then persists into adulthood, affects social relations, communication and behavior. According to Inserm, there is no cure for autism. However, care adapted to the child improves his functional abilities to interact with the world around him and to adapt to it.
Researchers at Tel Aviv University, Israel, have recently discovered that cannabis oil can treat this disability. To reach this conclusion, scientists conducted a study, including the results were published in the journal Translational Psychology. In this research, they examined the behavioral and biochemical effects of long-term oral treatment “with CBD-enriched medical cannabis oil in a mouse model with the human gene mutation, Shank3”. The researchers recalled that this gene mutation was associated with 1% of cases of autism.
Cannabis oil would have an impact on behavior
The study authors noted that this treatment alleviated anxiety and decreased compulsive behaviors, such as grooming, by 70% in mice. “Autism is theorized to involve excessive brain arousal that causes compulsive behaviors. may explain the reduction in behavioral symptoms”, explained Shani Poleg, author of the study, in a statement from the university.
Scientists have found that even in small amounts, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, helps reduce behavioral disturbances. “Our results suggest that CBD alone has no impact on animal behavior. They show that treating autism with medicinal cannabis oil does not require a high CBD or THC content” , said Shani Poleg.
