What if cardamom could help fight against the triple negative breast cancer ? According to researchers at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, this spice from India may be effective in fighting triple-negative breast cancer, which represents 15% of breast cancers.
“It has been difficult to develop a targeted therapy for triple-negative breast cancer that is both safe and effective. For this reason, it is absolutely necessary to study medicinal plants as a new way to fight this cancer.said Patricia Mendonca, author of the study in a communicated. The fact that cardamom has been used for centuries as a spice and more recently as a supplement shows that its consumption is safe and can be beneficial.“
The researchers analyzed two triple-negative breast cancer cell lines: one derived from African-American women and the other from women of European (Caucasian) descent. And the consumption of cardamom would decrease the ability of cells to survive in all patients followedwhatever their origin.
The study also wanted to see how cardamom might affect thePD-L1 gene expression, which is found in tumor cells. In women with triple negative breast cancer, this gene is overestimated and allows cancer cells to escape the control of the immune system. And according to the results, cardamom would reduce the expression of the PD-L1 gene in Caucasian women. “This is the first study to describe the inhibitory effect of cardamom on the expression of the PD-L1 gene. It shows the spice has potential to improve cancer treatment without having as many side effects as other chemotherapeutic agents“, concludes Patricia Mendonca.
Many other proven benefits
If the properties of cardamom against triple negative breast cancer are still in the study stage, other properties of cardamom have been proven. She would be a great aid to digestionwould have analgesic properties or would be a source of essential minerals such as calcium or magnesium.
So, in herbal tea or spices on fruits, vegetables or white meats, do not hesitate to consume it to take advantage of its benefits.
