Obesity is often associated with 4 important comorbidities. Here are which ones.
- A person is considered obese if their body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30.
- More than 10 million French people suffer from obesity in France.
- This disease is often associated with other significant health problems.
While more than 10 million French people are affected by this pathology, the new data from OFÉO 2024 study indicate several major comorbidities related to obesity.
1/ High blood pressure.
High blood pressure (HBP) is often associated with obesity. It affects 22% of the total population, 36% of obese people and 39% of severely obese people.
2/ Diabetes.
Diabetes, present in 9% of the general population, affects 17% of obese people and rises to 21% for those with severe obesity.
3/ Psychological disorders.
Psychological disorders such as depression affect 14% of the general population. This percentage reaches 18% among people with severe obesity.
4/ Sleep apnea.
Finally, sleep apnea syndrome, which affects 9% of the general population, has a prevalence of 20% in obese people and 25% in those with severe obesity.
“These results highlight the urgency of effective interventions and multidisciplinary care for this at-risk population,” estimated The League Against Obesity in view of these figures.
“The high prevalence of serious comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes and psychological disorders among people with obesity indicates that increased efforts in prevention and treatment are needed to improve the care and quality of life of these individuals”adds the institution.
When do we start talking about obesity?
In 2020, 30.3% of adults in metropolitan France were overweight. This prevalence increased slightly in 2024 to 30.8%, indicating relative stability in this category. The obesity situation, on the other hand, showed a more significant increase, with its overall prevalence increasing from 17% in 2020 to 17.9% in 2024. This increase is particularly marked in the severe and massive obesity categories, indicating a progression towards more serious forms.
Overweight and obesity are defined as a abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that poses a health risk. A person is considered overweight if their body mass index (BMI) is greater than 25 and obese if it exceeds 30.
Obesity is the result of a complex interaction of biological, economic, social and environmental determinants, the impact of which varies according to the genetic and epigenetic predispositions of individuals.
