We live happily when we are in the morning. Researchers at the University of Toronto have come to the conclusion that getting up early was a guarantee of well-being. Much less happy would be night owls who find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. Teenage partygoers can be reassured, this propensity to wake up early in the morning becomes more pronounced as you get older.
The Canadian researchers studied a group of 435 adults aged 17 to 38 and a group of 297 adults aged 59 to 79. Both groups answered questionnaires about their emotional state and their state of health. They were also asked about their favorite time of day.
The results showed that the older group tended to be more morning-oriented while the younger group was predominantly evening-oriented. Around the age of 60, only 7% have “nocturnal bird” habits. Conversely, only 7% of young adults have a more morning rhythm of life. Differences that translate directly into the feeling of well-being felt.
“We noticed that older people reported more positive emotions to us than young adults and that they were more morning people than young people, summarizes René Biss, one of the researchers”, quoted by The Huffington Post. And to conclude: “Being ‘in the morning’ is associated with more ‘happiness’ in both groups”.
Get up early to be healthy
Getting up early in the morning would not only affect emotional well-being. Those affected would also feel healthier because they sleep better. Quality sleep that would have positive effects on the immune system. Why is it so good to get up early? Certainly because this rhythm is more in line with the organization of society, calculates René Biss. With this in mind, evening people are more prone to suffer from “social jet lag.” “Society is much more organized around a morning person’s schedule”
To be in the game and flourish more, night owls would therefore rather have an interest in changing their way of life, advise the researchers. They may get into the habit of going to bed earlier to wake up refreshed and in a better mood the morning.
