These colorful rubber shoes have been in fashion for about ten years. Worn for their comfort, they are actually bad for the feet according to podiatrists.
Very colorful, not really aesthetic, but washable and apparently comfortable, Crocs “made in USA” are almost everywhere. Much worn in the medical world, in particular by nurses, instead of classic medical clogs, these shoes would not be recommended by podiatrists, foot specialists.
Journalists from American Huffington Post interviewed podiatrists on the subject. Everyone agrees that you should not wear these rubber clogs all day, otherwise you will suffer from pain and deformities in your feet.
Risks of pain, tendonitis or deformities
The fangs are shaped like a hoof, with a thong on the back. Entirely made of plastic, these shoes are popular for their practicality: they are comfortable, easy to clean, and rather light. Over 300 million pairs have been sold across the world. But for the specialists, they would be responsible for certain pains or affections of the feet.
“Unfortunately Crocs are not meant to be worn all day,” says Megan Leahy, chiropodist in Chicago. Initially designed to be worn at the pool or the beach, they would not protect the heel enough, but when it is unstable, the toes compensate by tightening to find a balance. This can cause pain from tendonitis, deformities of the toes, nail problems or calluses.
These different risks are not unique to Crocs, they also exist when you wear flip-flops or shoes that do not have a back. This can create pain in the heel or in the arch of the foot.
Do not wear them all day
The only people who would benefit from wearing Crocs would be those with very hollow arches and those with excessive edema of the legs or ankles. But even for them, wearing these shoes all day, between 8 and 10 am, therefore, presents risks.
In short, this summer, we reserve the Crocs for the swimming pool, the beach or the garden, and especially we do not wear them all day.
