After almost 50 years he disappears from the company canteen
Times are changing and Volkswagen has to move with it. The latest step in sustainability is claiming its latest victim – perhaps the most painful to date. The canteens at the Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg are removing the iconic currywurst from the menu. The oblong meat lollipop was available for almost 50 years – the delicacy even has its own Volkswagen part number.
No more meat at Volkswagen
The canteen in Wolfsburg will be completely meat-free, according to an internal memo held by the DPA press service. Earlier, the currywurst disappeared from the canteen in Hanover. Jackfruit burgers with fries and rossini pasta with herb cabbage were added to the menu there. There doesn’t seem to be a vegan sausage.
We can imagine that it is not nice coming back from vacation for a lot of employees. When Volkswagen changed the curry recipe, there was already a lot of fuss. Volkswagen claims that a lot of employees support the decision to offer less meat. We do believe that: more and more people are eating less meat.
For the people who struggle with it, there is good news
Apparently the employees of Volkswagen can still get the currywurst in a shop across the street. For home then, probably. You can also order the currywurst yourself, if you look carefully. A number of web shops still offer the famous Volkswagen currywurst.
Volkswagen also stops combustion engines
The brand previously announced that it would stop producing combustion engines for Europe in 2035. They do not have much choice, because then there will probably be a ban from the EU on new petrol and diesel engines. Hopefully banning meat from corporate canteens isn’t the beginning of the end for currywurst. We are all in favor of eating less meat, but this would be a loss.
