Volkswagen is presenting the ID.5 electric “coupé” SUV, and L’argus is showing you more than four months from its commercial launch. This newcomer, which inaugurates high-tech equipment, can officially travel up to 520 km on a charge and is available in a GTX version of 299 hp.
No doubt, Volkswagen has connected its ID range to direct current. Launched at the end of 2019, this family of electric vehicles, which already includes the ID.3 compact sedan, the ID.4 compact SUV and the ID.6 family SUV reserved for China, is still enriched today with the arrival of the ID.5. This SUV with a coupe profile, the brand’s second after the very recent Taigo thermal, is positioned on the same segment as the ID.4, to which it constitutes an alternative with a more dynamic appearance. Its arrival in dealerships is not scheduled for the end of March 2022, but we are already offering you to take a tour of the owner.
The ID.5, a cut ID.4 or a separate model?
At 4.60m long, 1.85m wide, 1.61m high and 2.77m wheelbase, the ID.5 displays dimensions almost equal to those of the ID.4. It just stretches 2 cm more in length. Its height of a small centimeter is explained by the diameter of its rims, which start at 19 inches against 18 on the ID.4. The catalog goes up to 21 inches. Apart from the shield, whose air intake houses a movable shutter, all the elements of the front face of the ID.5 are identical to those of the ID.4. The “fastback” profile sees the roof declining in a gentle curve from the central pillars to the rear end. The roof arches tighten as the stern approaches, and the stern has a fixed spoiler. The assembly is designed to minimize aerodynamic drag, whose coefficient here reaches 0.26 (0.28 for ID.4) in favor of autonomy. Volkswagen has also raised the rear fenders of the SUV to give it a muscular appearance.

The ID.5 is fitted with LED front and rear lights as standard. Optionally or at the top of the range, the anti-glare Matrix LED headlamps simulate a wink of unlocking the car. And if the car is equipped with the optional keyless access, they follow the driver with “gaze” as he approaches. The rear lights, linked by a light strip, can also be arranged for a 3D effect on the best-equipped versions.

Cut by style, SUV by volume

The profile of the ID.5 is synonymous with a loss of 12 mm in headroom at the rear compared to the ID.4, but legroom is still generous thanks to the long wheelbase and flat floor. The boot has a volume of 549 l, 6 l more than that of the ID.4 thanks to an increased loading height.
Rear bench seat folded down, its capacity of 1,561 l is 214 l less than that of the ID.4. By way of comparison, a 4.71 m long Ford Mustang Mach-E offers a volume ranging from 402 to 1,420 l, with the addition of a 100 l trunk at the front. The front compartment of the ID.5 only houses the radiators and part of the air conditioning system. As an option, the vehicle can be equipped with a “hands-free” motorized tailgate and an electrically retractable hitch.

Despite the inclination of the rear pillars, the interior space remains generous.
Light at the heart of the ID.5 design

Installed at the front of the ID.5, we find ourselves in familiar territory. The atmosphere is refined and visually neat, but the materials are not opulent. The small 5.3-inch digital instrument panel is carried over from the other ID models, a standard 12-inch central touchscreen has almost all of the controls and information, and there are very few buttons. The “coupé” SUV nevertheless introduces an optional head-up display in augmented reality, the indications of which are projected to be 10 m away. Under the windshield and across the width of it runs the ID. Light; this light ring communicates information by signaling a danger, an upcoming change of direction or the presence of a vehicle in a blind spot by specific lighting of certain areas with defined colors. The device also responds to voice commands from the Volkswagen’s new personal assistant, connected to the Internet and able to learn as it is used. Always light, the ID.5 automatically benefits from mood lighting with ten colors to choose from. A palette that can be extended to thirty optional shades.

Several types of seats are available, those in the first row being fitted with adjustable armrests as standard. If Volkswagen promises ” fillings without animal products With an ecological perspective, the equipment catalog nevertheless includes a leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel. Why this contradiction?

” Currently, no other material offers the same qualities in terms of feel and durability. When we have found a replacement material, we will remove the leather from the ID range. »Answers Stefan Voswinkel, head of communication for Volkswagen products and technologies. In the meantime, according to him: ” No one wants a plastic steering wheel. “
Up to 299 hp or 520 km of range for the ID.5
Positioning itself more upscale than the ID. 4, the ID.5 uses only the largest battery, with a net capacity of 77 kWh. The base powertrain at launch is called Pro and relies on a 174 hp rear electric motor. A new level of power for an MEB platform vehicle. Above is the 204 hp Pro Performance model. Both are limited to 160 km / h, and Volkswagen announces WLTP range of up to 520 km, that is to say no better than the ID.4 despite the leaky flag. The offer is capped by the ID.5 GTX, whose additional engine placed at the front increases the total power to 299 hp and offers all-wheel drive, as on board the ID.4 GTX. These two models are flanged at 180 km / h and share the same front bumper, with side air intakes highlighted by LEDs. The ID.5 GTX can travel 490 km on one charge according to the manufacturer.

The top of the ID range. in Europe
Volkswagen is now relying more on equipment packs than on finishes for its new models. The ID.5 range has five: Design, Infotainment, Comfort, Assistance and Sport. Particularly “connected”, the car can receive remote updates, scheduled every twelve weeks, and at the same time the activation or deactivation of certain options on request after leaving the factory. It embeds inter-vehicle communication technologies (with other equipped Volkswagen) as well as between vehicles and infrastructures, with a range of 800 m. It should also be noted that the optional semi-autonomous Park Assist Plus parking system can memorize a driver’s maneuver at the press of a button to reproduce it on its own later. Details of equipment and prices specific to France will be clarified shortly. In France, the ID.5 range should start around € 45,000.
