The shortage of semiconductors constantly forces manufacturers to make trade-offs. At Volkswagen, the basic finish of the Golf 8 has been temporarily stopped, as well as the Business dedicated to companies. The German compact consequently becomes more expensive in diesel.
Not very popular with buyers, basic finishes are not favored by builders either. For them, they are indeed less profitable than the higher versions, which allow them to generate more margin. The low-price specialist, Dacia, has recently decided to remove the entry-level Access on its Duster and Sandero. Today, it’s the Volkswagen Golf’s turn to follow the same path. But, for now, this is only an interim measure related to the shortage of microchips affecting the entire automotive industry. In the price brochure for the model dated October 28, two finishes are indeed accompanied by the mention “ temporarily unavailable “ : the basic variant, soberly named Golf, and its equivalent for professionals, the Golf Business.
Access price up for the 2.0 TDI 115

For the brand, this decision was all the easier to take as these two variants are only available in diesel, with the 2.0 TDI 115 associated with a manual gearbox or the DSG with double clutch. If they were the least equipped in the range, they were therefore not the cheapest. With the 1.0 TSI 110 three-cylinder petrol engine, the German compact remains accessible from € 27,815. En the other hand, for diesel addicts, it will cost € 2,505 more than before, i.e. 31 € 870 minimum. A budget extension that allows in return to benefit from a significantly increased standard endowment. You will gain:
- wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection;
- the induction smartphone charger;
- tri-zone automatic air conditioning;
- the Pro version of digital instrumentation;
- electrically folding exterior mirrors;
- lane change assistant with blind spot detector;
- the interior mirror with automatic day / night adjustment;
- the “Ready 2 Discover” multimedia system with 10-inch touch screen.

On the professional side, only the Life Business finish remains. It starts at € 33,090, or € 2,010 more than Basic Business. With, as a guide for additional equipment:
- the reversing camera;
- recognition of road signs;
- the space saver spare wheel;
- the “Discover Media” navigation and multimedia system with 10-inch touchscreen.
The rest of the range is unchanged, as are the prices. The same goes for the Golf SW station wagon, which started directly with the Life finish. As to how long the absence of these basic versions will last, the mystery is for now complete. But Volkswagen is probably not in a hurry to see them return to the catalog …
