Since Monday April 3, 2023, the remuneration of temporary doctors has been capped at a maximum of 1,390 euros gross for 24-hour call. A divisive decision… and we explain why.
What is an interim doctor? In short, an interim doctor is a replacement. Non-salaried, the temporary doctor works in the hospital (public or private) or in a clinic to compensate for a lack of staff: he has a short-term contract (temporary), generally on a weekly or monthly basis.
Capped remuneration for temporary doctors: 69 health establishments could suffer from this measure
The most sought-after temporary doctors in France are anesthesiologists, radiologists and emergency doctors: until now, these “rare” specialists could be paid up to 2,500 or 3,000 euros net for 24-hour call… c ie for a single day’s work.
Thus, the government and the French Hospital Federation have estimated that medical temporary work represents an additional cost of 1.5 billion euros each year for public finances.
Why does this capped remuneration make people cringe? This Wednesday, March 29, 2023, the National Union of Interim Hospital Physicians (SNMRH) published on his website a list of 69 establishments across France which could have to close services because of this decision – these are mainly operating theaters, maternity wards and psychiatric services.
For Arnaud Robinet, president of the French Hospital Federation (FHF), this cap could actually cause problems with “a temporary risk” to see services close in a “large number of cities“, especially medium-sized cities. “We hope that this period will be as short as possible.” he continued.
