It strengthens the bones and participates in the growth of children: vitamin D, which many French people lack, is essential. Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark have just discovered that it could protect the unborn child from Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity (ADHD).
In their study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, they measured the level of vitamin D in the cord blood of 1233 newborns. Then, when the children were two and a half years old, the mothers observed their child’s behavior, and responded to the Child Behavior Checklist. This questionnaire makes it possible to detect specific attitudes of ADHD and to make a first diagnosis. It is estimated that this disorder affects 10% of children, especially boys. It is characterized by inability to remain calm, difficulty concentrating, lack of attention.

Scientists also took into account other factors suspected of playing a role in the onset of the disorder: tobacco, alcohol, obesity, psychiatric illness and the age of the mother, as well as the education or number of children in the family. siblings. Their study confirmed their influence on the disorder, but the link with vitamin D remains significant, beyond all these factors.
The researchers do not yet explain this phenomenon, but hypothesize that vitamin D may play a role in the early development of the fetal brain.
