April 9, 2000 – Many people experience persistent pain after certain types of injuries such as broken bones. Known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy, this problem is characterized by pain, swelling, and reduced movement out of proportion to the injury, and that lasts long after healing.
The study was carried out on 115 people aged 24 to 88 who had suffered a wrist fracture. One year later only 7% of people who took 500 mg of vitamin C daily for 50 days had reflex sympathetic dystrophy compared to 22% of those who took a placebo.
According to research author Dr. NE Misicko, this easy and inexpensive treatment seems particularly appropriate for elderly patients and those who quickly complain of pain while still having their cast. It seems that the beneficial action of vitamin C on this type of pain can be explained by its stimulating effect on the process of repairing injured nerves.
