A survey, carried out by Ifop, reveals that the legs are the second part of the body that causes the most discomfort among the French.
- The two main causes of the complex related to the legs are their size, considered too big and the presence of cellulite making them unsightly.
- Only 43% of French people know that it is a chronic and progressive disease.
- Almost half of those surveyed have a symptom of the disease.
The physique is the cause of complexes for many French people, since one in two says they are dissatisfied with their appearance. A new study, conducted by Sigvaris Group France for Ifop on a panel of 3,000 people, reveals that the legs constitute the second part of the body (18%), after the belly, which complicates the French the most. An embarrassment that particularly affects women, 26% of whom point to their legs as a physical defect.
A disease known by only 43% of French people
The two main causes of the complex related to the legs are their size considered too large by 76% of respondents and the presence of cellulite making them unsightly for 56%. The other major cause of discomfort results from venous insufficiency syndrome which affects 34% of women and leads to the presence of varicose veins and spider veins. Among sufferers, 27% cite their legs as their biggest defect. Results that push 80% of respondents not to dare to wear certain clothes and one in two people admitted to refusing the practice of certain activities requiring them to show their legs.
These results prove the negative influence of venous diseases on the people concerned while they remain little known. Only 43% of French people know that it is a chronic and progressive disease. “This condition most often results from a loss of elasticity and tonicity of the veins, as well as a dysfunction of the valves located on the venous wall which have the role of preventing the reflux, or, in other words, to help the blood return to the heart”, specifies the French Federation of Cardiology.
Less than half of those concerned are receiving treatment
Among those surveyed, only one in four admitted to knowing the symptoms of this pathology, while 45% admitted to having at least one of the symptoms of this disease. Among the symptoms, we find a feeling of heavy or painful legs, swelling of the ankles, the presence of edema, spider veins or varicose veins, cramps and tingling, and in more severe cases, phlebitis or ulcers. However, few French people have recourse to treatments to relieve this syndrome. Only 55% of people claim to have already consulted a doctor on this subject and 65% acknowledge that they are not taking any treatment, while 45% of respondents report intense or moderate pain, 32% an impacted sleep and more than 4 out of 10 people report a significant or moderate impact on daily activities or work life.
