May 31, 2010 – A vegan lifestyle, where the plate is made up of a combination of certain vegetables and soy products, would provide the best protection against cancer, says Dr.r Michael Greger, nutrition expert and popular American speaker.
He presented these findings after consulting over 5,000 nutrition articles published in the scientific literature in recent years. Michael Greger was invited by the Montreal Vegetarian Association to present his conference entitled Latest in nutrition (The year review in nutrition)1.
The best vegetables
“Diet is directly linked to cancer,” says the speaker, “even more than genes or tobacco. Michael Greger’s lecture takes the form of a quiz. His loose questions aim to separate the myths from the science-backed facts about nutrition and lifestyle.
His first question was about a recent study that compared 34 vegetables eaten regularly and their properties to slow the proliferation of cancer cells against 8 types of cancer. Spinach, the all-round champion, is said to prevent cancer of the pancreas, breast, lung, kidneys, prostate, stomach and certain brain tumors.
“Radishes are useless in preventing pancreatic cancer, but slow down the progression of stomach cancer. Orange peppers have no effect against stomach cancer, but slow the progression of prostate cancer by 75%, ”says Michael Greger.
Most of the most popular vegetables, such as carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce or potatoes, are said to have no cancer-fighting properties, he claims. On the other hand, the properties of garlic would make it the vegetable par excellence, tied with spinach, against cancer, argues Michael Greger.
Fish and meat?
The Dr Greger does not encourage the consumption of fish and meat because of the toxic chemicals they contain, for example polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). He favors the consumption of soy products which, according to studies, improve memory and reduce the death rate.
Throughout his speech, Michael Greger insisted on the importance of doubting studies and one’s own claims. What should be remembered, he stresses, is the association of certain types of vegetables which would slow down the proliferation of certain cancerous tumors. “A spinach salad made with radicchios, beets and tofu, with garlic vinaigrette, would make an excellent healthy choice,” he gave as an example.
