The calendar of vaccinations and vaccine recommendations 2016 has just been published by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Few changes from to the previous calendar except that, for the first time, the shingles vaccine made its appearance there.
Shingles: general recommendations
Vaccination against shingles is recommended for adults aged 65 to 74 years (this vaccine can be given at the same time as the one against the seasonal flu). Despite lower effectiveness, it is also possible, for one year, that is to say until the publication of the 2017 vaccination calendar, to offer vaccination to people aged 75 to 79 years.
This live attenuated vaccine is contraindicated in immunocompromised people. For now, a single injection seems sufficient.
Yellow fever: what’s also changing
The 2016 vaccination schedule also simplifies vaccination against yellow fever: the vaccination booster for residents of the department of Guyana aged 2 years and over and people from the metropolis who stay or wish to go there is not no longer necessary, except in special cases. The Ministry of Health is thus following the recommendations of the World Health Organization dating from August 2015.
However, the booster is still recommended for:
• Children residing or staying in Guyana before the age of 2: one dose between 9 months and 2 years then a second dose from the age of 6 and within a maximum of 10 years.
• Women vaccinated for the first time during pregnancy, vaccinated people living with HIV and immunocompromised people vaccinated: a second dose administered 10 years later.
• People whose vaccination against yellow fever is more than 10 years old: a second dose in the event of active circulation of the virus in the population.
