It is now possible to benefit from a uterus transplant in France. THE’National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) decided to authorize this technique and therefore launched a clinical trial at the University Hospital Center (CHU) of Limoges. Eight women with infertility of uterine origin will receive uteri from brain-dead donors. a similar trial for 10 women was launched in September 2015 in the UK.
First births planned for 2018
The success of uterine transplants is recent: in October 2014, a 36-year-old Swedish woman born without a uterus due to a genetic disorder gave birth to a child after having received a transplant of this organ. Since then, four Swedish babies have been born using this process. In France, the first births for the clinical trial are not planned before the end of 2018. Indeed, the transplant itself may take time, since it is necessary to find a donor compatible with the recipient. then start the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF). If the results are conclusive, new trials could see the light of day in other French hospitals.
New hope against infertility
The clinical trial authorized by the ANSM in France gives hope to women suffering from sterility uterine, whether it is a total absence of uterus from birth, a malformation, or ablation following a Cancer or bleeding from a previous childbirth. These sterilizing pathologies affect around one in 500 women.
