“To maintain the reserves of blood products at a satisfactory level, blood donations must be regular and constant because the lifespan of blood products is limited (5 days for platelets, 42 days for red blood cells)”, recalls the ‘French blood establishment.
A simple gesture that saves lives
No treatment or synthetic drug can yet replace blood products. Irreplaceable and vital, blood products are indicated in two main cases: emergency situations, and chronic needs, which concern patients that only a blood transfusion can help to heal or alleviate.
“A donation lasts 45 minutes but the collection itself only lasts 10 minutes. It is estimated that each year, a million patients are treated thanks to the generosity of donors ”recalls the EFS on its site.
