Wedged between the 305 and the 306, which were both available as station wagons, the Peugeot 309 was not entitled to this type of bodywork. A most zealous English owner filled this gap.
From the Peugeot 304 station wagon launched in 1971 to the new 308 SW, which just arrived in dealerships in February 2022, the line of compact station wagons from the lion brand has been almost uninterrupted. Almost, because in the saga of the 300 series, the Peugeot 309, inserted between the 305 and the 306 has never been officially declined in break.
The French coachbuilder Heuliez had, for his part, cogitated a station wagon based on the Peugeot 309, the car also had the particularity of being asymmetrical, offering a door on the driver’s side and two doors on the passenger side. But the lion brand never gave the green light for industrialization, arguing that the target clientele would prefer the 405 station wagon.

A British station wagon of odds and ends
Whatever, this did not prevent an English owner from transforming his Peugeot 309 GTI into an estate version. For this, the original tailgate bubble was replaced by a home-made element. According to our information, it would be a rear window and its surroundings borrowed from a Volkswagen Polo / Seat Cordoba station wagon to which were added plexiglass side windows. While on top, a pavilion with a receding line ends with an integrated spoiler.
Note that in order to harmonize the profile of the car, the beltline is now rising directly above the rear door handles. This makes it possible to be at the exact height of the windows added on either side of the tailgate. Still with the idea of “fluidifying” the style of the stern, black paint visually reduces the thickness of the original quarter pillar by half. Above all, this gives the impression of having larger windows at the rear of the vehicle, like for a shooting wagon.
“We hope that this new tailgate is equipped with reinforced jacks or at least strong enough to be able to lift the assembly which carries the equivalent of a good third of the roof.“
Finally, the recipe used on this Peugeot 309 is strictly the same as that of the Renault 25 transformed into a station wagon by the Belgian coachbuilder EBS. Unless you touch the structure of the hull, which could obviously affect its rigidity, there is no other possible solution.
