The two disinfectants, Surfa’safe and Opaster, commonly used in the medical environment, are contaminated with germs, according to the ANSM.
Two disinfectants, Surfa’safe premium and Opaster, widely used in the medical environment as in hospitals, medical offices have been recalled as a precaution by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM). Germs have been detected in these products used to disinfect surfaces and medical devices (stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors).
These germs are naturally present in the environment but turn out to be “opportunistic”. That is to say likely to cause infection in immunocompromised people, with a weakened immune system. The ANSM specifies that “the risk of infection for the general population is very low”.
Analyzes are in progress
The presence of Burkholderia cepacia and Pseudomonas oryzihabitans bacteria has been demonstrated in several batches of Surfa’safe premium Opaster. The ANSM has asked the Anios laboratory to carry out microbiological tests on other products from their range of disinfectants. For the moment, the first analyzes have not revealed the presence of bacteria on these products.
However, “pending the end of the investigations on the other Anios products, the agency recommends as a precaution and as far as possible, to favor the use of other brands for patients with a weakened immune system (under chemotherapy, transplant recipients, patients with cystic fibrosis, on extended stays in intensive care or neonatology, etc.), specifies Thierry Sirdey, director of medical devices at the ANSM.
The water network of the factory in question
This contamination would be linked to the water network of the Anios factory, located near Lille. The company therefore came to a standstill. It carries out a disinfection of its water circuits. “A restart can only be considered after verification of the resolution of the problem”, underlines the ANSM.
