The ANSM gives its recommendations in response to the shortage of Anapen adrenaline auto-injector pens.
- There is currently a shortage of Anapen adrenaline auto-injector pens. All three dosages are affected.
- Full availability of Anapen pens is expected during the first quarter of 2025.
- To compensate for these temporary disruptions, patients treated with Anapen will be prescribed, during their next consultation, an adrenaline auto-injector pen of another brand, namely Epipen or Jext.
France is currently facing a supply shortage of Anapen adrenaline auto-injector pens. The French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) has issued its recommendations for dealing with this.
Anapen: supply tensions until early 2025
“The Bioprojet laboratory has informed us of a shortage of Anapen adrenaline auto-injector pens. All three dosages are affected: from now on, the Anapen 300 microgram (µg) pens, and from September, the 150 µg and 500 µg pens will also be out of stock.”warns the ANSM in a press release published on August 8The end of supply tensions for emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions is expected during the first quarter of 2025.
To compensate for stock shortages, it is planned to prescribe patients an adrenaline auto-injector pen of another brand, namely Epipen or Jext, during their next consultation.
The ANSM also asks users not to request a replacement of their auto-injector before the expiry date. “If you are using Anapen 500 micrograms (mcg), your doctor may prescribe one or two 300 mcg pens of another brand, depending on your clinical situation”adds the organization.
Adrenaline auto-injector pens out of stock: production transfer at fault
The reasons for this disruption in the supply of Anapen adrenaline auto-injector pens are known. It was caused by a move. Its manufacturer has, in fact, explained to the health authorities that it had carried out “a transfer of production site which led to a delay in supplies of Anapen pens”.
Since these tensions are not related to a quality defect, patients who currently have this product can use it until its expiration date without worry.
Adrenaline is the only treatment for anaphylaxis, so it is important that people with severe allergies always carry adrenaline auto-injectors with them, and know how to use them correctly.
